Richard
Beck Peacock is the director of the documentary
Petals – Journey into Self-Discovery.
He was an Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Cinema Department
at Palomar College, San Marcos, California. where he taught documentary
filmmaking and screenwriting. He is the author of The Art Of
Movie Making: Script To Screen (Prentice Hall, 2001), co-author
of Learning To Leave: A Woman’s Guide (Warner Books,
1993) as well as several screenplays including Magnetic North.
His previous documentary film is Men And Childbirth. He
now lives in Victoria B.C., Canada.
Early on, Peacock recognized the brilliant photographic vision of
Nick Karras and encouraged him to publish his work. At the same
time Peacock started to make a video record of the creative process
and cultural conflicts Karras encountered when producing a body
of photography that, by its nature, was bound to come up against
basic cultural taboos. Like most documentary projects, the journey
taken was full off fortunate turns and unexpected twists. As more
personal levels of meaning were confronted, the subject that Petals
explores became a journey of self-discovery for both the
participants, the filmmakers and the Karras himself.
